Best Romantic Vacations

Best Romantic Vacations by Murdoch - March 2007
I don't know about you but for me Penang is definitely the best holidays I ever had.
I still remember this day deep in my heart how this beautiful island of Malaysia
capture the moment of the best romantic vacations for me and my wife during our
1st anniversary. We arrived in Penang shortly after staying few days in
K.L. As we're from Canada, it took us more than 12 hour just to reach K.L
international airport. In Penang we stayed in Shangri-La hotel with a balcony
overlooking pool, ocean and the breathtaking Batu Ferringhi beach. The
accommodation is a little expensive but the stay is worth it. The hotel staff are
friendly, the bar and restaurant are fabulous and the swimming pools are
magnificent. This place makes us feels like home.

While in Penang enjoying our best romantic vacations ever, we visited some of the
famous tourist attractions such as the impressive Kek Lok Si Temple, the cool
Penang Hills, the awesome feng shui of Cheong Fatt Tze mansion, Penang snake
temple, various museums and not forgetting the popular Gurney Drive - A heaven for
Penang food lovers. We tried many locals’ delicacies during our stay here such as
asam laksa, hokkien mee, char kway teow, passembur (Indian Rojak), Penang rojak,
poh piah, chendol and many more. The food is so great and so cheap. The Gurney
Plaza which is located besides Gurney Drive hawker centre is a popular shopper’s
paradise. I bought a local made shoes "power" brand for only RM39.9. As for my
wife, she bought many locals clothing and shoes as the branded ones are very
expensive here.

We also board the nostalgic Penang ferry at night and are amazed with the stunning
view of Penang Bridge. The brightly lit iconic bridge of Penang is so beautiful when
view it from the ferry. The unforgettable ride took us about 20 minute from the
island to Butterworth ferry terminal. We did not stay long at Butterworth and board
the next available ferry back to Penang. Just want to capture the magic moment
and brings back fond memories on our best romantic vacations.
During sightseeing at the heritage city of Georgetown, we board an eco-friendly
vehicle; Trishaw. There is a 50+ uncle Mr. Lim which brings us to tour around the
historic city of Georgetown. We pay RM40 for the 2 hour ride. Pretty expensive if
you were to ask me but because the uncle is so knowledgeable about places of
interest around Georgetown, the amount was worth it. He seems to have the
uncanny abilities to remember and explain it to us with all the details and story
about the particular places that we pass by.

The trishaw ride end at Komtar (the tallest building in Penang at the moment) where
we took a lift to the viewing floor of the building. At the viewing floor, there is
nothing there to see actually except for landscaping view of the whole Georgetown
city. The Penang Bridge is also clearly visible from here. We went to Prangin mall
(located just besides Komtar) after that. This mall is huge and filled with many
serious shoppers. And for my wife, you can tell that she's happy by the look on her
face. No wonder people always say that shopping malls is build for women not for
men.

Back to our hotel, we visited Batu Ferringhi night market and bought fake watches
for RM20, DVD for RM10 and some T-shirt for RM10 each. A piece of advice when
you're at the night market; Try to bargain for your stuff as the price can be
exorbitant sometimes. We also bought some locals fruits such as papaya, guava and
rambutan. The night market in Batu Ferringhi is open 7 days a week, so there is no
hurry to shop here. Take your time...

The Atap Leaf in Batu Ferringhi is our favorite place for lunch. It has pleasant
surroundings, cheap food but menu is quite limited. Another place where you can
get cheap and delicious Penang food is at Long Beach Cafe. This place consists of a
number of food stalls grouped around a shared seating area. The seating is under
cover and has an extensive array of ceiling fans to keep you cool.

Waiterswaitresses come to your table to take your drink orders and there are even
big screen TVs to keep you occupied! To order food all you need to do is go to the
stall that takes you fancy, tell them where you are sitting and they will bring it to
you when ready. The best thing I like about this place is that all the stallholders are
most helpful in explaining their dishes and the standard of the food is extremely high.
For only RM10, I could stuff myself easily.

We like the pub and clubbing activities at night. The surrounding air is pleasant, the
beer is cool and the night always stays young. The activities around Batu Ferringhi
seem to be on-going even it is already wee hour in the morning.

There are many foreigners in Batu Ferringhi, a testament that this place are well
known not only for its exotic beaches but world class accommodation. We met
fellow Canadian during our best romantic vacations stay and we share our stories
and experience. Truly we enjoy coming to Penang and already have some planned
ahead when we will visit again this place.

All in all, we did glad that we chose Penang as the place to celebrate out
anniversary. It is the best romantic vacations for me and my wife and I highly
recommend this place to everyone. Enjoy your vacations! Murdoch.
