Tanjong City Marina - A waterfront with lasting impression

When coming to Penang via Penang Ferry now days, one will notice a beautiful looking buildings located just beside the ferry terminals. The vibrant orange and white structure is no other than Penang first inner city marinas -
Tanjong City Marina.

Built at a whopping cost of RM 44 million and occupying 1.6 ha of the coastal land, the marinas are strategically located at the heritage
city of Georgetown. It is part of a RM210 million project by the federal government aimed at giving a modern facelift to the island waterfront complete with colonial architecture to compliment the impressive heritage buildings in Penang.

The construction of Tanjong City Marina (formerly known as the Church Street Pier), was completed in October 2005 and is now fully operational with 102 berths ranging from 11 meters long to 50 meters and can accommodate up to 140 yachts and boats of various sizes. The marina caters to vessels with maximum draft of up to 4 meters.

This project encompasses the redevelopment of the old Church Street Pier into a world-class marina complete with Custom, Immigration and Port Clearance (CIP), Taxi / Car Rental Services, restaurants and a clubhouse. Other major development in the project includes re-developing Frank Swettenham Pier (a walking distance beside the marina) into international cruise terminal to bring in luxury cruise liners.





The popularity of the marina get into a slow start during its debut in 2005 (due to some technical and environmental glitches) but has since recoup and attracted many yachting communities from neighbouring countries such as Thailand, Singapore and Indonesia. Locals from Langkawi, Lumut and all the way to Johor has also started to make a stopover at the marina.

With the rising popularity, the marina has the potential to become a new entertainment hub for Penang, where shows and exhibitions can be staged. The latest ones include The Nautical Lifestyle Event where a full 3 days exhibition showcases of luxury yachts and marine-related equipment. It was a fun-filled day for the huge crowd that turned up to part take in the free boat rides as well as numerous exciting activities.




Tanjong City Marina also play host to the annual Raja Muda Regatta. Established in 1990, it is Malaysia's oldest keelboat sailing regatta and one of the region's premier events, ranking alongside Thailand's Phuket King's Cup and Hong Kong's China Coast Regatta and China Sea Race. The prestigious race takes pride of place alongside other famous regattas such as Phuket Race Week, Singapore Straits Regatta and the Philippines President's Cup. Others major activities will be a yachting rally tour from 'Darwin' to 'Bali' to 'Kupang' to 'Singapore' to 'Langkawi' whom has included Penang on their route and is scheduled to arrive on the island on month of November. Many yachting enthusiast will be looking forward for this day.



If you're a yacht owner and intended to visit the marina, you are required to call in first using VHF channel 68 when passing Pulau Rimau or Pulau Jerejak if entering from south or while heading east after passing Tanjung Bungah on your starboard if entering from North West. Provide to them information such as boat's name, sail or motor powered and length over all. And if you need further assistance or traffic condition, switch to channel 12.

What's more, being earmarked as one of the top destinations for the Visit Malaysia 2007, Tanjong City Marina will become the latest addition to the country's impressive collection of marinas and will definitely be an excellent centre of tourist attraction while visiting Penang.
